Dr. King’s birthday has become one of those days I dread, if only because so many of my fellow white people are going to spend it co-opting his message to spread their own.

I know far too many people who complain about it:

1) Compared to just about every other Western country, we barely get any time off. Yet, I’ve actually had people complain to me that we shouldn’t get the day off because it’s too close to New Year’s.

2) More distressingly, I know people who are irritated that it’s dedicated to MLK. If it were a white civil rights leader, you wouldn’t hear one fucking peep about getting this day off.

Three guesses as to the skin color of the people making these complaints.
