The 90s were the death rattle of the southern conservative Democrats. Clinton and Gore during that time, especially in the early 90s, were closer to being southern conservative Democrats than to being progressives (that’s where Clinton’s third way stuff came from).

Right. Moderate to liberal socially but conservative economically. Carter was similar but less hawkish.
