My wingnut state senator was arguing in the Unicameral against “socialists” who want to eliminate the police and turn Nebraska into some dystopian hellscape.

Another senator had to remind the Republicans that three-quarters of the towns in Nebraska have no police, and of those which do, many are towns with only a marshal to enforce town ordinances.

That doesn’t matter though. They’ve since entered a budget bill which would “prohibit” removing any funding from a police department.

What the fuck is it lately with “socialists”? It’s like these people put the text of The Lord of the Rings into a word processor and find/replaced “orcs” with “socialists”.

I got into a long discussion with a retired Seattle-area cop I know who was literally claiming that “socialists” are roaming the greater Seattle metro area and attacking both cops and the people who support them.

The best analogy I can think of is when Mr. Burns on the The Simpsons starts inveighing against anarchists and Boleshiviks. I don’t think this person really gets what socialism is. Based on the conversation, she’s watching Fox and they’ve got her scared out of her wits.
