I tell them my financial aid departments tells incoming students, in no uncertain terms, that it is physically impossible for a part time job to pay for college. You WILL need extra help. And this is a state-run school.

Not many people pick up the conversation after that.

States provided substantially more assistance to students back in my day. But then, at least partly thanks to the emergence of Ayn Rand and “no more taxes” philosophies, states were forced to cut back because they did not have the funds available to provide the same level of support. Also to retain the best faculty, schools seemed to be in a financial arms race, which left everyone poorer.
