Okay, here’s my thought-about-it-for-a-bit thoughts:

I think he really feels guilty for what he did. He still doesn’t want to have to give anything up because of it, though. Yet, he still feels that guilt, and it’s telling him he should suffer.

That’s why we’re getting the weird, conflicting, nonsensical statements. He’s got two irreconcilable ideas in his head, and they’re having a turf war. (I’ll bet he’s also got a turf war going on in there about Jenny vs. Hot Mama in Argentina.)

Certain Democrats don’t have this problem. They only have the part about getting off without consequences.

I’d much rather have naked arrogance of power (metaphorically speaking, of course - I don’t wanna see Sanford sans shorts) than phony piety.
