I admit, the extent to which this is true has surprised me. And it’s not just the GOP leadership, it’s the rank-and-vile as well.

The very same people who claimed that money going to the Clinton Foundation, from which the Clintons derive no income, was TREASON!!!, but the Trump Organization, whose profits directly enrich the new President, can solicit business from foreign governments, and they see nothing wrong with that.

It’s made me question whether good really does triumph over evil, and whether the arc of the moral universe really does bend toward justice. I have never believed that the ends justify the means, but we are facing an opponent who is not shackled by honor, consistency, morality, honesty, or even basic logic.

I’ve seen NeverTrump Conservatives say they warned people that someone like Trump might take over the Tea Party, but in fact, Trump is simply the Tea Party distilled.

One of Driftglass’ better lines is ‘there is no Tea Party’, which is absolutely true. The Tea Party was merely Republicans who wanted to pretend they weren’t associated with the disasters of the Bush administration, while simultaneously supporting the exact political positions that made those disasters inevitable.

Democratic self-rule will obviously fail if a sufficiently large fraction of the electorate is willfully stupid and malicious. The US is in serious danger of failing in this manner.
