The social and cultural “center” is a lot more liberal and inclusive than the political “center”. That has to do with gerrymandering of House seats and the fact that less densely populous states are over-represented in the Senate.

Remember, as with the Presidential elections, if you count overall Democratic vs GOP votes at a national level, there should be a Democratic majority in Congress.

I don’t know about you, but I don’t want my life and livelihood to be totally subject to whether the guy down at the corner store is a bigot or not. Prolly under 10% of employers would DADT or worse their workplace, and I’m sure under 20% of retail and restaurant providers would refuse service to Black people, if the political centre were reflected in that it was legal to discriminate and to be disability-inaccessible again. The problem is, only the minorities of the majority could succeed in actually discriminating. The Black woman owning the Big and Tall shop can’t afford to refuse the patronage of even someone who, it got back to her via the grapevine, is in the local Klavern. But she’s lost access to two supermarkets and 10% of the nice restaurants she was used to patronising herself.

And worse yet, bigots overbreed. If they’re legally free to be bigoted again, people will be raising their children to make even the sociocultural centre being-so-far-left, a short-term aberration.
