Texas has a state militia quite separate from and independent of the National Guard, the Texas State Guard. This is organized and trained as a military police unit and normally handles civil assistance work such as disaster relief, traffic control at major events, search and rescue and the like. It is intended to replace the National Guard on state missions when the National Guard is in federal service. They sometimes work with the Civil Air Patrol in search and rescue operations.
