Oh my God. Just what we have long feared. Now we are going to start resembling the "less developed" and former Soviet Nations? Solving our differences by armed force?! Do they realize if they can have one, so can every other political action party? Code Pink, PETA, NAACP...anybody for any reason. This is not a direction we want to take the country. I hope the political candidates backing this crap gets trounced. I was trying to keep an open mind on the tea parties. They are making it harder daily.

re: #10 Naso Tang

They are planted about 3 feet away from the house, once they grow up tall enough I'll just put a ladder between the beans and the house. There's no need to put the ladder out now because there are no beans yet and the ladder would be sort of an eye sore. I'm only going to harvest the bottom ten feet on the vine anyways. The top part is just for shade during the hottest months.

Report: Man Nearly Killed by Giant Breasts; I Thought "My Time Had Come"

NEW YORK (CBS) Take this one with a grain of salt... uh, better make that two cups full. Claire Smedley, from Blackpool, U.K., claims her boyfriend decided to leave her after he was nearly suffocated by her gi-normous breasts while they were having sex.

That makes it a crime of passion, right?

The mother of three, who boasts 40LL breasts, told News of the World that her boyfriend, Steven, usually loves to be smothered by her love. But this time she misread his flailing for excitement, as he was really suffocating beneath her bountiful bosom.

After a few minutes, she noticed he had stopped moving and appeared to not be breathing, Smedley told the British newspaper.

She was about to call for help when a startled Steven finally came out of his trance. "I did think my time had come," Steven told News of the World.

Luckily, Steven survived...but the relationship did not.

Claire told World News that she is newly single and planning a career in modeling, to turn her giant boobs into genuine assets.

Let's hope she doesn't try to sleep her way to the top.

My take: History is neither cyclical nor linear. It is helical, spiraling around a central axis so that it loops back again and again, but always slightly off (forward or backward) from the original and never exactly the same. Make predicting the future much harder than with either other theory. Feel free to rip it to pieces. I just made it up.

I should amend my statement: History should be seen in both its linear and cyclical aspects. Some trends keep coming up, even things move overall forwards.

Okay hard to frame well-First and foremost-Nothing Obama and his administration has done justifies any kind of militia. Nothing!

But setting that aside, yes the 2nd is the one that ultimately defends the rest in some future nightmare scenario, like a President refusing to surrender the office at terms end. Or some similarly unlikely event. But unlikely in part because the 2nd is there.

I understand what you are saying. Let me just say--and I believe you agree with me--that what these guys are suggesting is not in the category of a 'Well-Regulated Militia'.

Reine linked to it downstairs, but I'm bringing it forward because I think it is important for more eyes to see it:

Okla. tea parties and lawmakers envision militia

One of the lawmakers is a candidate for the OK GOP governor's race.

I can't help thinking with horror of these militias coming up against the great big, Federally funded, well trained, US military. It would be a blood bath. And there would be little cheering as we would be killing our own brothers and fellow countrymen a la The Civil War. Arg. At least back then they could claim historical ignorance of the outcome.

I do agree. The false flag is the alleged necessity of the militia. I recall 55 mph and its politics. And its alleged lack of constitutionality. At a far milder more clerical level some states fought the 55mph mandate tooth and nail. New Mexico was the best. Before that some states had no speed limit on the highway.

OK. Now? I can go on about it at length, speaking, and drinking, but haven't written about it much. Basically, my notion is that since the 2nd directly ties gun ownership to a regulated militia, that's how we should handle it. You own a gun, you demonstrate your ability to use it safely, and you enroll with a local militia which would operate as a sort of para-emergency-law enforcement backup, according to the needs of your locale.

Not really. Not when Federal authority can send them overseas leaving you without a reserve force for hurricane season.

So I wonder has any Governor ever tried to countervene? I mean, in this hypothetical situation we've dreamt up in which the president refuses to hand over power (who does this remind be of?) and the Federal forces (Army, Navy, Capitol Police, etc.) choose not to act, could the Governors command the NG to do their bidding over the President's? What are the rules in this regard? Now you have me wondering. I know there was a question before the Supreme not long ago about the ability of the Fed to force state NG to go even if states were unwilling to fund etc. But that's not exactly the same thing.

Well Regulated Militia, IMHO is there as needed. Wildfires, hurricanes, riot control, even helping train youngsters who may well join the real military one day. Being local they can help fast after disasters. It is a civilian rapid reaction force that has the option to train as they desire within the law.

Un trained micro militias formed during the LA riots. Civilians held off looters and fire bombers. These dissipated as fast as the crisis ended. The California National Guard was otherwise occupied somehow. Late to the dance as it were. The Police were overwhelmed, and retreated from neighborhoods to protect essential government buildings, like their own HQ. No press releases no manifestos. Just folks that stood up for a few days into the temporary vacuum as needed.

re: #63 SanFranciscoZionist

"The Second Amendment deals directly with the right of an individual to keep and bear arms to protect themselves from an overreaching federal government."

???

Reading the founding fathers, that is a major part of the original intent. The other major part is that to them, standing armies were incompatable with a free nation. These United States would only have a tiny cadre of professional soldiers and would fight the enemy with militia levies. They did not foresee that this would prove to be a miserable failure even as soon as 1812 (or had failed miserably during the actual revolution but even they could see what they wanted to see not what was reality on occasion...)

They also would not have imagined the vast difference in even simple small arms that exists between then and now. Crew served & larger weapons would be an interesting issue to put before them though I expect that they would come down and say to allow them as canon were allowed to the militia & sailing vessels in their day.

It can seem strange in our day and age but when you look at how they expected the common defense to be provided for, an armed citizenry is very important to that conception.

I started the Zionist Mall by getting affiliate partnerships with other online stores. This way I do not have to stock any actual inventory or deal with shipping, and get 10% of all web referrals.

Judaica and Israeli web stores request to be included in the Zionist Mall because it means more exposure for them, and the value added is that it is a portal for Israeli web-based businesses.

There are other generic affiliate programs like Linkshare and Commission Junction and of course the Amazon affiliate program here at LGF.

PIMF... except that as a photographer, Canon is in my spell check as correct.

SFZ's comments on a militia & remembering the Swiss model is interesting to roll into it to. I've pondered the idea of allowing anyone who was 18+ to register as a militia member, successfully complete training & be issued a government rifle & handgun. Bi-annual proficiency testing with government ammunition required. But that would explode too many heads on both the far left and far right.

And yes, militia members would be eligible for call up by the state government for service in time of emergency as I see this organization.

Swiss model?

It's not a bad one. Theirs, I think, is more regulated than Americans would like, it's a smaller and less geographically diverse place, and also, I believe, they can't use those guns for personal stuff. (I could be wrong.)

186 William Barnett-Lewis  Mon, Apr 12, 2010 9:09:49pm

re: #173 Rightwingconspirator

I almost made a crew served camera joke. My 40D was a bit much to learn coming up from a D30 Canon. Lusting after a 7d for the advanced processing and video.

But gun ownership has a couple purposes, so I'd let hunters and those in need of self defense tools possess guns apart from legit state militia participation.

Heh. There's a reason I went back to a Leica IIIf & a Summitar... ;)

I agree on the multiplicity, that would simply give a service oriented outlet for some of the issues the nation faces and would be in addition to any other firearms that any individual legaly owns.

And one last bit, I don't see these militia as either being paid or being liable for call up outside of the state they are levied in. That is the proper place for the fully military National Guard.

Not to knock your idea too much, but anything like it would soon be coopted by the feds. We have a Reserve AND a National Guard. You can make as many new organizations as you want. Texas has a state militia quite separate from and independent of the National Guard, the Texas State Guard. This is organized and trained as a military police unit and normally handles civil assistance work such as disaster relief, traffic control at major events, search and rescue and the like. It is intended to replace the National Guard on state missions when the National Guard is in federal service. They sometimes work with the Civil Air Patrol in search and rescue operations.

Long term, probably. Everything has unintended consequences after all. Still, if organized along the CAP model, I think you could keep things under control. Somehow I doubt the Militia Act is going to be before congress anytime soon so it's hardly that big a deal. I just enjoy pondering it and the possibilities both positive and negative.

Yours truly joined the Civil Air Patrol as a cadet in 1963. We had a great time, a lot more fun than Boy Scouts (my previous involvement) since we hung around the airport, wore these nifty uniforms and occasionally flew in actual airplanes. Unlike Boy Scout uniforms, ours were free, at least to us. I stayed on until I joined the Army in 1970. I've thought about re-joining as a gray headed old codger but I have rather a full plate these days and 2 grandchildren to play with. I may do it yet.

These nutburgers in Oklahoma dance around the issue of what purpose their militia will serve but it is fairly obvious they mean it to provide violent resistance to federal authority. This is a universe away from sanctioned organizations like the Civil Air Patrol and the Texas State Guard.
I hope they realize that they are skirting the edges of outright treason.
If their rebel army does manage to thwart efforts by the FBI, federal marshals, etc. to enforce the law, Posse Comitatus is superceded in a state of insurrection and the next step will the arrival of tanks and artillery from Fort Sill and elsewhere. Lots of luck, morons.

Oh, of course. In making a point, one leaves out all kinds of exceptions.

One of my favorite poet-first-and-singer-later artists is Townes Van Zandt.

His song "The Silver Ships of Andilar" is a letter-perfect Tolkienian myth in something like ten verses.

Townes was amazing, may he rest in poetic peace.

I have a slight grudge against the Indigo Girls because one of my classmates on the Scotland study-abroad trip we were on insisted that Dire Straits "sucked" and the Girls' cover version of Romeo and Juliet was the only "real" one. I just laughed, shook my head and never talked to her about music after that. ;-)

re: #238 Cato the Elder

This is why I hate most contemporary music.

In the old days, there was poetry, and then someone set it to a tune.

Since, say, 1948 - arbitrary cutoff date - it's been tune-driven. Come up with a catchy one, then write horrendous lyrics to go with it.

I do not except anyone from this barring, perhaps, The Beatles, Pink Floyd and Leonard Cohen.

I don't have tv right now. Not missing it either.

Must have my big screen for sports and the rare movie.

Anyone watching The Pacific? This had no chance to succeed. Unlike the big unit action in Europe, the Pacific war does not lend itself to drama. No continuity, no shining moments, just brutal isolated actions culminating in a crescendo of death on island after island. Also, this was not a pure ground war like Europe, you can tell the tale of a few marines, disconnected from the whole, and still miss the reality. This was a naval war more than anything. This show was way too ambitious. This story cannot be done except piecemeal, only then can it be seen as a whole. By definition there can be no central hero or set of heros to drive a story as was done with Band of Brothers.

A shame, I have studied it a lot, and still it is misunderstood everywhere.

Question!

Does the 2nd Amendment cover light sabres, turbo lasers and super lasers???

Back in 1994, I saw an ad for a special commemorative replica of Flash Gordon's raygun. It was supposed to be an exact replica of the movie prop from the 30s serial, made from brass, wood, glass, and some kind of early plastic. It came on a cool looking art deco wall plaque. I took one look at the price though, $495, and said, "for that it had better fucking work."

Here's a current version for a rather less alarming $175 (though this is a replica of the 30s Daisy toy and not of the actual movie prop, which was more elaborate by a fair amount.) Even so, it should at least be able to disintegrate cockroaches for that price.

Most people don't credit any country singers. Actually, the country singers that stick around for a while (NOT the Dixie Chicks and their ilk) are excellent lyricists. And they talk about real subjects likely to effect real adults. No it is not all beer, cheatin, and pickup trucks. That's the effect of wannabe types cluttering up the airwaves. Listen to Loretta Lynn, Cash, Rogers, Wynette, etc. Don't listen to the songs that made blockbuster sales into pop status. Those tend not to be their best work.

Yes, it was all that. The racist meme however is a more modern take however, based, justifiably, on the propaganda that is archived from the time. The truth is that those fighting the fight recognized the Japanese for the unforgiving, brutal, fight to the death opponent that they were. Respect and hatred were synonymous.

racism was a huge element on the ground...it's nothing new...the Japanese believed to be superior to everyone, and because of their relentless brutality and refusal to surrender, they were seen as animals to the Marines, freaks from another planet...most Marines had an intense hatred for the yellow horde and felt they should be exterminated in the field, and of course the Japanese allowed that to happen...no handing out smokes or chocolates

re: #332 Bagua

It's Stavin' Chain singing the Ballad of "Batson," in Lafayette, La.

You can recognize all the faces from that era?

I did a quick search and his real name was Wilson Jones.

On page 22 of the July 1939 issue of Down Beat, Onah L. Spencer wrote that songwriter Richard M. Jones witnessed Stavin Chain (possibly A.K.A. Wilson Jones) playing Boogie Woogie in 1904 at Bully Reynolds' T P Saloon in Donaldsonville, Louisiana adjacent to Texas & Pacific Railroad camps 21. Moreover, Richard M. Jones indicated that Stavin Chain had traveled from Arkansas. Since Stavin Chain was heard in Donaldsonville performing for Texas & Pacific railroad workers, he likely had traveled from Shreveport on the Texas & Pacific line. Prior to Shreveport, Stavin Chain could have come from Texarkana directly, or from Texarkana by way of Marshall. Prior to Texarkana, Stavin Chain could have arrived via the St. Louis, Iron Mountain, and Southern Railroad.

Since the Texas & Pacific Railroad had built eastward from Marshall, TX to Shreveport, LA, and then to Donaldsonville, and then to New Orleans, it is plausible that the T&P railroad was responsible for bringing Boogie Woogie out of Texas to from Marshall to Shreveport, then to Donaldsonville, and then to New Orleans. (Since 1871, the New Orleans, Mobile, and Chattanooga Railroad had an operational line between Donaldsonville and New Orleans. Thus, upon T & P's reaching Donaldsonville, Boogie Woogie could have spread quickly to New Orleans. Thus, if we were able to go back in time, following T&P's railroad route from Donaldsonville towards Texas points back to Shreveport, and from there, back to Marshall. Thus, this is still another line of thought that causes me to regard the Texas & Pacific Railroad as The Boogie Woogie Railroad.

Late to the thread - but I wanted to say that I was lucky enough to get to see Queens of the Stone Age when they did that little 12 city tour in support of Songs for the Deaf. Grohl only played 12 shows with them, and I got to see them at Irving Plaza in NY. There was maybe 1000 people in the audience.

To this day, that was still the best concert I ever saw.
