They must have some serious evidence to go for 2nd degree murder. I expected manslaughter.

I thought 2nd degree murder was classified as manslaughter.

1st degree - Pre-planned deliberate killing
2nd degree (voluntary manslaughter) - taking action which you knew would lead to the death
3rd degree (involuntary manslaughter) - accidental death due to something the person did
