This is not unwinnable. It is hard, but democracy is hard. Every generation has to learn that it cannot simply sit back and watch politics go by.

My periodic reminder:

In the 1960’s, early 70’s, liberal activists were super-active. They were well-organized, loud, public, in the streets day after day.

From 1964-1974, we got

Civil Rights Act
Voting Rights Act
EEOC, Fair Housing
Medicare, Medicaid
EPA
OSHA
Roe v Wade
end of the draft
lowering of the voting age

but once the draft ended, the liberals called MISSION ACCOMPLISHED! and went home. Conservatives called HALFTIME! and went back to the locker room to strategize for the second half.

Reagan’s campaign, and everything since, is a reflection of who’s on the battlefield and who didn’t bother.
