Christ, I’d completely forgotten about that. I never heard about that bullshit until well into adulthood, having lived in the Northeast all of my life.
I can only imagine how galling it is to have your state government tell you “We are going to celebrate a man who fought to make sure your ancestors remained slaves.”
Our Lt Governor is African-American. Lt. Governor Fairfax was understandably uncomfortable with all the tributes being paid to Lee. And if we’re going to celebrate a Jackson, Stonewall’s sister Laura- an Unionist and slavery opponent is much worthy.
