There’s a lot of confusion about what “free movement” means in this context.

In full “free movement” is: “Free movement of labour(*), capital, goods and services inside the single market”.

((*) Later clarified to “free movement of people”, as you can’t have free movement of “labour” if dependents are not allowed to move with the “labourer”).

Patel’s fake ideological position is that “free movement” in that sense is discriminatory, it only applies to people from inside the single market. So replacing free movement by work visas for everybody from outside the UK is “fairer”.

Actually she’s just a xenophobic authoritarian scumbag.

What the Tory voters hear: “end free movement” = “no more Polish plumbers”.

It also means “no more Spanish nurses”, which may be a little more of an issue. It also kind of glides over the fact that “we’re going to make it up with Indian and Filipino workers on coercive work visas, not you lazy sorry whiny lot.”
