Not as odd as it seems; they’re an original pre-Revolution Boston family, Frank Crowninshield was the original editor of Vanity Fair in the early 1900’s, others were famous for other stuff.

Including, that Jacob Crowninshield brought the very first elephant to this country in the late 1700’s (he bought it in India, it was a big deal touring exhibit. No circus, just an elephant.)
