What kind of shitty sword can you just break in half over your knee? Obviously the cavalry kept a supply of shit swords just for these ceremonies because they would be useless in battle.

Cavalry sabers weren’t that useful by the late 19th Century anyway, especially compared to firearms. I think most cavalry in that era got more use out of their revolvers.
