I remember that shit. I remember hearing that children testified to the ritual slaughter of animals, including zoo animals, including a giraffe. I remember thinking how crazy it was that ANYONE would even TRY a case with that kind of shit, let alone get convictions.

Satanic panic also involved a lot of dubious interview techniques that encouraged children to fabricate and rewarded more elaborate stories. The McMartin preschool case (the one I suspect you’re remembering, because of the giraffe) propagated across the kids because of the interviews and parents feeding them details.

Subsequently, “recovered memory” techniques have also prompted and implanted more and more elaborate narrative.

And if you’re unfamiliar with Mike Warnke, he’s described on Wikipedia. His fabricated tale of being a Satanic priest, along with “Michelle Remembers,” created a bank of tropes that are still wheeled out whenever you need to set-dress your fantasy.

Again…it’s so much like porn, how it’s curated and tended and collected.
