Diana was the best thing to ever happen to the royal family. Both in her life and in her death, she brought a new popularity to the Windsors that had sort of bottomed out as people resigned themselves to the fact that Charles, stick-in-the-mud, would be the next King of England. She gave them hope that the next generation would be more with the times.
I very much sympathize with Charles. I suspect he’s On The Spectrum, and intensely private, and shy, and Diana was a really lousy match for him. And I also sympathize with having One True Love who isn’t available - there was a decade when the not-yet-Mrs. FBW and I were dating other people while maintaining a friendship, and that was painful.
He’s in a role he probably doesn’t want, that makes demands on him that he has difficulty handling, and everyone dislikes him for it.
