Growing up in Northern California (about 20 miles east of Redding), I’d ride my bike in 100+ heat to Sun Oaks Tennis Club (about 10 miles), play 4 or 5 sets of tennis with my buddy Chris, then bike home afterward. We’d get stretches of 8 or 10 days of 100+ heat (114 wasn’t unheard of), but we were kids. Set of tennis, splash in the pool, two more sets, splash in the pool, another set, pool, bike home, jump in the pool there.

I played stick ball, with my buddy Jeffery substituting for home base, using a wet wad of toilet paper in Brooklyn in 98 degree heat… 6 innings of stick ball… jump in an open sewer… roll a bum… wash off in Verrazanno Bay and then get home before Dad sobered up.
