I’m no advocate for FB - I don’t even have an account and never will - but I think the sheer scale of the problem that needs to be addressed needs to be appreciated. To hire enough people to monitor billions of posts over millions of accounts is just not going to make the business model work.

I like to work with real-world comparisons (call me a dinosaur). Do we hold all the bars in the country responsible for the conversations that happen within their walls? But we do call the police when crimes are committed.

If there was a way to catch and punish those that actually post the content - real prison time if appropriate - that would help. While the only punishment is just suspension of accounts right now the problem will not cease.

How about if FB can be allowed to rely on public reports of illegal content, but then become responsible if those reports are not handed over to the relevant authorities?
