The passive voice, equally tricksy, would be, I think, “Man killed by gunfire”, or “hundreds die in violence”. Like, what’d they have to up and do that for?

“Millions of Jews died in the Holocaust” I see that each year, like clockwork, instead of the accurate, “German people killed millions of Jews in what later became known as the Holocaust, or Shoah.”

No, they just up and died. Nobody knows why they took such drastic measures. Yez, Virginia, there really is a Devil.
