It’s really not an exaggeration to say that US movement conservatism is committed to undoing centuries of progress by returning to pre-Enlightenment views.

This business of wanting to turn the US judiciary into religious tribunals to validate their views is part of this overall pattern.

I agree. For awhile I’ve seen it as a few loose screws rattling around. But it appears that in some ways we’re seeing the fruits of an increasingly unified narrative that, against all objective evidence, is determined to redefine America’s history in William Bradford’s Puritan terms as a “shining city upon a hill” of dedicated white puritans where any counter narrative is either an aberration or a lie.
