I thinks it’s a big mistake to assume Bernie’s viability requires a personal purity narrative. It is perfectly possible to criticize Hillary Clinton on real issues without trying to claim that one is pure as the driven snow.

Unfortunately, this isn’t the way the Democratic primary is playing out.

Apparently Sanders found himself getting little traction outside of his narrow demographic sliver when he argued the issues, as he tried again and again in the early campaign, so now he’s gone Sandbagger in arguing that he’s the only “pure” progressive. Which means no longer can he simply disagree with Hillary, he has to be diametrically opposed to her. Problem is, his history is not so one-sided and it’s coming back to haunt him.
