Public health officials are being pretty candid about the failure of the quarantine on the Diamond Princess. Having the crew distribute prepared meals was one likely vector. Letting the interior cabin residents walk out onto the deck for 90 minutes a day was understandable but couldn’t have helped.

How else were they going to handle meal distribution? It’s a disaster — only alleviated by the fact that this is not the big one for communicable diseases. They better figure out what to do so that they can handle the big one when it arrives — when mortality is 20+% instead of the less than 2% that this one appears to be.

And of course, there is always the original nonfiction Hot Zone book which dealt with an Ebola type airborne disease that was 100% fatal among the monkey population at a facility in Reston. Fortunately, this one had virtually no effect on humans. But a slightly different strain next time?
