Buchanan falls into the trap of rationalizing. In this case rationalizing the actions of a heinous figure. The bottom line is humans have a marvelous ability to rationalize just about anything and IMHO it’s one of our most dangerous traits.
The only defense is to stay strongly moored to one’s beliefs about right and wrong.
Hitler was spectacularly and evilly wrong. Period.

I don’t think Buchanan is rationalizing. He knows exactly what he’s doing…and why.
