The loquats I’ve been eyeing/eating have a couple of weeks of good harvest time. However, the past few days have been so sunny, and slightly warmer, I think the season will soon end.

I love loquats. My local Asian market carries them, I don’t think they’ll grow around here.

Take consolation in that most of the varieties of apples and pears, which are related to loquats (all are part of the rose family), can’t bear fruit down here because it doesn’t get cold enough. There are some varieties that are grown in San Diego, but they’ve never impressed me. There are varieties of loquats that can tolerate freezes, I thought. Perhaps you might be surprised and find one that will work in Portland.
