Yep, only an independent investigation. If a US investigation (of which there are several) absolves the US from guilt in this apparent war crime, this won’t be taken seriously by most.

We’re not going to do that and we shouldn’t. Let the world think what it wants, but IMO the strike was needed to clear out the Taliban from a strongpoint and to make clear to the Afghan Army’s men on the ground that they would be supported.

Frankly also, trying our people for this would have a chilling effect I’m not willing to incur. It also makes it likely Iraq would opt for Russian help due to our inability to provide the air support they need. And the US isn’t going to let anyone else hold a trial of its military personnel over this.

No, the greater needs dictate America’s actions here. Doctors Without Borders should told: “Sorry your people got killed and we’ll pay for reconstruction, but as far as our people go the pooch is unscrewable.”
