Your mother’s first cousin is a conservative; he is uninterested unless it affects him personally. His son and daughter are already here, therefore it doesn’t affect him personally.

It’s frustrating because I know he’s a good guy. He helps take care of my widowed great aunt. But you do underscore how conservatism works. My grandparents knew another older couple, husband loved complaining about the government but he was all for the benefits that helped their daughter. Nothing wrong with that. But to me, it’s kind of how Rob Portman only became pro SSM because of his son. Great, you love your son, you’re not a total Alan Keyes miserable bastard but where were you for other people’s sons and daughters that would have had their rights limited before you realized your son was like them.
