Understanding oil economics 101:

High prices drive California’s gasoline usage down

Three things:

Gasoline price goes up, usage is down. BUT, gasoline prices are way up, while usage is down just a tiny, tiny bit. Elasticity.

Diesel prices are up, and usage is up. Trucking is an indicator of economic activity, combining commerce and industry. More trucking means more goods being shipped and produced.

Diesel and gasoline use are somewhat decoupled because end use of gasoline includes quite a bit of recreational and discretionary use.

You can buy TDIs in California now, too…so more people are moving to diesel, as diesels tend to get better mileage.
