Getting here late again, as usual.

I’m seriously put out with the wingnut reaction to the video of Marines apparently pissing on dead Taliban. It might be one thing to suggest that leftists and peaceniks are overreacting, something else again to revel in this barbarism and praise these nitwits for their failure of discipline and character.
I was talking to an acquaintance about it this afternoon. He said, “Well, I can’t judge them. Hell, if I were in their shoes, I might do it too.”
That really hit a nerve. I said, “I HAVE been in their shoes, I didn’t do anything remotely like this, and I think they should be thrown in the brig.”
The conversation was over at that point.

I was also struck by the relatively muted reaction so from the Taliban. Part of the reason might be that they don’t grasp the outrage: This would be pretty mild stuff to them. The desecration of enemy bodies is completely routine with them, and it gets far, far uglier than what we saw in the video. Beyond that, it is their standard and stridently repeated narrative that foreign troops engage in all sorts of atrocities and misconduct. An unusual outburst of rage over this incident would tend to undermine the credibility of that narrative.
