American interference? Are you kidding me? The statement made by President Obama was a bare minimum, and as I’ve repeatedly pointed out over the past few days, Obama could say something that supports freedom and human rights that doesn’t reflect on the Iranian internal politics.

As it is, Ahmadinejad’s flacks were going to claim external forces - the US - were behind the demonstrations in any event. It’s a bogeyman that never goes away. If the US said nothing, they’d still find a way to blame the US for the violence.

After all, the Iranians just released Saberi and are still holding the Alaei brothers - all of whom were accused of actions to overthrow the government. They were trumped up charges, but that’s the groundwork that was laid.
