I heard Jerry Brown on NPR today talking about the Pope, and he mentioned that when he was a Jesuit seminary student they were taught that Jesuits were not allowed to seek higher office - so it would have been unthinkable for a Jesuit to be Pope.

So that wasn’t just a myth.
