The shooter will almost certainly be found mentally ill. All the signs of full-blown mental illness are there. Now this doesn’t necessarily mandate an acquittal. Whatever his state of mind, he was able to make plans and stick to them.

I’d guess it would come down to guilty but mentally ill, and a sentence that includes mandatory treatment. The trouble is, what if the treatment works for long enough to give some future govt a cover story for releasing him?

Barring remarkable advances in psychiatry, a full cure, in the sense that one recovers entirely from say cholera if one lives, is not in the cards.
