Nip is short for Nipponese, which derives from the Japanese word for Japan: Nippon. It’s a US/UK slur for a person of Japanese descent.

I thought it was a poorly spelled indication that he wasn’t in jail, or wasn’t a companion to Gumby. (Not in the pokey!)
