A friend came and visited me here in 2008; she was pretty shocked at how good the cellphone service was here compared to back in the states, not to mention the price being far lower than what she was paying back home for pretty much the same level of service.

Ditto. My American friends were amazed they could get a decent data connection in the middle of nowhere China.
