They are free to search it as much as they wish — it’s in their possession, after all. They’re not free to compel Apple to develop a new technology and add it to the phone.

As long as they are only asking them to do it for this phone I see absolutely no problem with it. This is not about adding a back door to all phones, it is about accessing this phone. Since apples code is closed it is reasonable to ask them to do this as long as they retain control of the code. Do it on a closed system not connected to any network to minimize the risk of the code getting into the wild.

No different than law enforcement contacting a security company to get help accessing a high tech safe.
