The epicenter was at the very southern end of the region where the USGS estimates a very large quake (the big one) might occur. That whole area is very active - it seems like only a couple of months ago we were discussing a quake just a few miles from that epicenter in Guadalupe Victoria.

For those outside of the region: the area in question is the delta area of the Colorado river. As such the land is quite flat and fertile (indeed, I’ve been pigging out on the 79cent strawberries these past few days) and farmed extensively. Many agricultural workers live in the region from the Gulf of California delta area of the Colorado river up the valley all the way to El Centro (in Imperial county California.) While on this side of the border the building codes are strict, down in Baja one never knows quite how a building was built. I’d be surprised if there wasn’t damage to dwellings in the area.

I’d be real surprised if Mexicali went unscathed.
