re: #218 wheat-dogghazi-mailgate

Today was my day off — a real day off, with no teaching preparation time or visits to neighboring schools in the way. Plus, it was sunny and hot — perfect for putting out bed covers for airing out before I pack the duvets away for the summer. I baked a loaf of bread. And I installed Ubuntu on a desktop computer and got Ubuntu and the AMD Radeon card therein to work nice with each other. After I fumbled around most of the day making mistakes installing the AMD proprietary drivers, and eventually succeeding, I stumbled upon a stack that told me exactly how to do it, step by step. Figures.

I haven’t messed with Ubuntu since version 10. I started with the latest version, 16.04, but then discovered that AMD’s current Radeon drivers don’t work with v.16.04. But they work just great with v.12.04, so that’s what I settled on.

Why Ubuntu? The desktop is a hand-me-down and it had XP installed. And, naturally, XP is incompatible with the Radeon R9 370X card I bought second hand, thinking I’d get into gaming again.

Computers iz fun — when they work right.

I prefer Linux Mint because the default desktop is closer to XP.
