And Now, Trump’s 3rd Party Challenger: A Raving Wingnut, of Course

They’re all crazy, folks
Politics • Views: 47,316

So today Bill Kristol unveiled his independent conservative candidate for president, and it’s David French — a guy who posted this at his Patheos blog last year:

“A defense of hatred.” Have you ever seen a better summation of the deranged American right wing in 2016?

I can’t even start to list all the batshit crazy stuff this guy has posted online. He’s homophobic, xenophobic, against contraception and women’s rights, etc. etc. He’s an enthusiastic endorser of the full right wing slate of regressive policies.

I actually support French’s third party bid, because people need to see that even a non-Trump candidate is a total freaking wingnut.

And French’s wife Nancy is also replete with connections to the farthest of the far right; she was the ghostwriter for both Sarah and Bristol Palin.

This article needs to add the unsufferable shitheelery that was his post about Prince’s death.

I’d tell him to pound sand up his ass, but given how he already acts, there’s no room for more unless he removes some sticks or corn.

So, they’re not actually trying to win with the third party candidate? I mean, this isn’t someone who could cost Clinton and Trump enough electoral votes to throw the election to congress (talk about a nightmare scenario). He might cost Trump some electoral votes, but all that does is throw the election to Clinton. I’m honestly confused by this

The extreme right has taken over the GOP. As much as they claim that Trump doesn’t speak for them, he does on most issues. In fact, he is a whole lot more blunt about what he’d do than the other right wing extremists like Cruz or Rubio. That’s why the “angst” about NeverTrump is going to come to a quick conclusion as it morphs into StopHillary (which means supporting Trump and backing their guy).

The GOP has clearly decided that they’ll run with a guy whose core support comes from irrational angry white guys who are white supremacists and bigots, because that is who the GOP is. Irrationally angry.

Why are they so angry?

Because everyone else is finally getting the same equal rights and protections they’ve had all along. They think that means their rights are somehow being taken away or diminished. As if somehow a transgendered person going to the bathroom is somehow depriving someone else of their rights. Or as if a gay person getting married is somehow depriving you of your right to marry someone of the opposite sex.

This is where the GOP is at. Standing against equal rights and protections.

Rolling back equal rights. Trying to roll back the safety net and ignoring the General Welfare clause of the Constitution because of some bass-ackward nonsense about how we’re taxed too heavily so the few that are truly rich should get tax cuts that will drive up the debt while forcing massive spending cuts to safety net programs harming millions of people.

Today on CNN Frum insinuated that they just want trump gone & if that means losing 2016, fine.

That is in fact, the moral thing to do.

Well, first off, this seems to be Bill Kristol’s little pipe dream, so chances are good that it’ll just never happen.

But in the event that they actually decide to do this - maybe they’ve decided that a President Trump would drive a wooden stake through the heart of what’s left of their party, and stopping that from occurring (even if it means throwing the election) is the only thing that could save them to fight another day.

Speaking in a less Rabelaisian mode, it’s hard to notice that French represents not a difference in content, but in tone. He’s still hateful, imperious, and fundamentally uninteresting in the notion that people that disagree with him are also citizens that merit a voice.

French communicates prettier—not much of a feat, since Trump’s composition and recitation is Doge-meme-level—but he runs to exactly the same “my people are Real Americans, you all can fuck off” position.

The one notable aspect of French that differs from Trump is the French is fully engageed with the perverse, empty “religion” of the far Right…but that’s not much of a win, given the hollow theology and personality-cult structure of that cluster of sects.

I’ll believe it when and if it actually happens. The vast majority of the GOF establishment put money over everything and if they oppose Trump at all it’s because they fear the loss of their gravy train.

Think of the old Cyndi Lauper cover of the song “Money Changes Everything” as a political manifesto and you have the GOF establishment.

Alicublog is on this.

Pardon my French

I have followed French’s career at National Review for years and will just quickly tell you that he’s not only against gay marriage, he’s also against Griswold v Connecticut, the decision that invalidated laws against contraception (“Is there a single legal doctrine that can stand against the quest for personal sexual fulfillment?” French thundered); that he denounced the widespread mourning of Prince’s death on the grounds that “Prince was ultimately just another talented and decadent voice in a hedonistic culture… notable mainly because he was particularly effective at communicating that decadence to an eager and willing audience”; that he has compared Kim Davis, that crazy clerk who refused to sign gay marriage licenses, to “men like Martin Luther, John Calvin, and John Knox — the men who first put the ‘protest’ in ‘Protestant’”; that he — well, I’m out of time for the moment, but you can peruse the archive for more if you can stand it. The point is, he makes Trump look like Eisenhower.

One of my basic standards on who’s a corpulent shit weasel? Opposition to Griswold

But holy asstrumpets, check out:

or French newbies, more on his interesting beliefs: After Dylann Root’s racial mass murders in Charleston, French wrote a post called “If One of the Churchgoers in Charleston Had Been Armed …”

and

He thinks you shouldn’t worry that black people get killed so often by cops because, after all, so many of them are criminals, or at least suspected of crimes. And Lord how he hates them Mooslims.

roy edroso has links to French’s stuff on this post, if you want to check it out and give him some deserved clicks.

Well, first, it’s Bill Kristol’s idea, so it’s guaranteed to be stupid. And it is so very, very stupid. French is a nobody, a complete nothingburger. Up until a few hours ago, he didn’t have a Wikipedia entry at all, and his only connection to politics was writing about it — no experience as a governor, as a legislator, even as a businessman.

And for a guy who’s supposed to be the anti-Trump, French is probably even crazier than Trump and a hell of a lot less charismatic. French is one of Roy Edroso’s favorite punching bags, because he comes across as a twitching, drooling mental case who still manages to talk like a .scolding prude.

Since I’m assuming they’re living together now, I’m also going to go ahead and assume he has cameras in his house, a tracking mechanism on her car, and a tracking chip in her cellphone so that he can keep up with her comings and goings when he’s at work. If so, this is a helluva way for her to live because he seems to remain unsure of the reason she married him.

Hopefully in a close race between Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump, David French will end up siphoning off enough votes from Trump, for Clinton to win. Clueless. It’s shameful that Sanders doesn’t want to admit that at this time in our history we have a GOP/TP that doesn’t want to govern but wants to legislate using social issues. There’s no d*mn way he’ll ever get them to agree to even discuss healthcare as a right for all. Plus, with him thinking he doesn’t need to campaign for down-ticket dems, if he were ever POTUS, who in the hell does he think he’d have in Congress to support his ideas? What pisses me off most about Sanders is him having been in Congress so long and being so clueless as to what he can and can’t get to pass in the body. I recall that he’s written several bills the last few years, and the GOP/Ters largely rejected them. What does he think would be different if he were POTUS, a position that wouldn’t allow him to keep his seat in Congress? And, with a GOP/TP majority, his ideas/plans/policies would go nowhere.

A couple weeks ago made six years that a good high school friend of mine died. It feels weird that it has been that long. And given the way he died, it always feels even more strange.

The accident was about three weeks before I graduated high school.

It’s definitely shaped a lot about how I approach life, these days.

Don’t call him a Berniebro. Trump troll, maybe. But definitely not a Berniebro. I’d like to see that nickname die a fast and painful death. It’s been used to stir up shit and foment anger at people simply because they disagree on a candidate. Oh, you don’t love Hillary? Fuckin’ Berniebro. Boom. End of conversation. I hate that shit. It’s such a shallow escape from having to have a conversation with someone with whom one may not agree. Debate is healthy. Dismissal kills debate and fosters siloed thinking.

Tonight I responded with the rest of CERT to help the fire fighters with a house fire caused by lightning. Approximately 3000 sqft., it belonged to a family with a whole lot of memorabilia, such as baseball trophies. The house was totalled. I searched through the house because if I didn’t, the mom was going to in her flip flops. I grabbed a few things for her that were pretty much only worth the memories attached.

National Racists Online are, once again, earning their moniker:

They are pushing a new article by VDH which lauds, among other things, Charles Murray, the incoherency of the Drumpfskind supporters, while jumping on Obama for race-baiting, etc.

Classic. Just classic.

And then, their website now offers a banner on each page with links to old articles, and what shows up on the splash page (for me anyway)? Well, none other than Derbyshire, with his column “White Like Me”, in which he is promoting white identity.

And yet the editors of NRO think they are on some moral high ground by criticizing Drumpfskind?

Dumb question, but are raccoons nocturnal? I’ve seen the occasional raccoon in the wooded area behind my apartment building, and saw one on my balcony the other day. Tonight I’m hearing what sounds like something walking around on the ceiling. I’m on the top floor of the building, so I’m guessing it’s some kind of animal.

I’m going to stop by the leasing office tomorrow to see about having it checked.

Oh yeah. Raccoons are awake at night.

I’ve had to shoo the motherfuckers (it might be just one) off my deck twice in the last few weeks. Funny, my german shepherd will bark at absolutely any little thing that walks by, but he was scared out of his wits on the deck when Mr. Raccoon showed up to eat some bird seed. After I scared the damn raccoon away, I found my dog on the complete opposite end of the deck, curled up into a little ball and not making one sound.

So this happened earlier this year in Stockholm, Sweden.

A guy decided to participate in the extreme right and soccer hooligan “cleanup of Stockholm” from immigrant kids.
Little did he know that the “immigrant” he decided to attack was a plain clothes police officer.
It was all over in 20 seconds or so.
He is now on probation for assault and violently resisting (a police officer), and is required to seek help for his substance abuse and mental problems.
He reportedly is very remorseful.

Puff piece on Trump

One thing to understand about Trump is that, rather unexpectedly, he’s neither angry nor combative. He may be the most threatening and frightening and menacing presidential candidate in modern life, and yet, in person he’s almost soothing. His extreme self-satisfaction rubs off. He’s a New Yorker who actually might be more at home in California (in fact, he says he usually comes to his home here — two buildings on Rodeo Drive — only once a year). Life is sunny. Trump is an optimist — at least about himself. He’s in easy and relaxed form campaigning here in these final days before the June 7 California primary, even with Hillary Clinton’s biggest backers and a city that is about half Latino surrounding him.

Start with James McMurtry - his daddy wrote Terms of Endearment - great folk singer/lyricist with a country bend - even his love songs have an edge to them.

James McMurtry: Out Here In the Middle

Hayes Carll (second l is silent) is kind of fun
Ray Wiley Hubbard (yeah, same guy who wrote Up Against The Wall Redneck Mothers) - has some great new stuff. One of the sing alongs my wife and I enjoy is Snake Farm (Just sounds nasty…pretty much is)…

Ray Wylie Hubbard “Snake Farm”
Stay away from bubble-gum country - Kenny Chesney & shit. Might as well listen to boy bands.

lawhawk  Jun 1, 2016 • 5:54:36am

There’s a reason that Trump wanted people to pay attention to his nonsense about the veterans donations. The legal front was showing that his scam school was indeed all that and more.

He was busy signing off personally on the sales pitches that helped his scam school part the marks from their money. People paid tens of thousands of dollars to hear how to make money in real estate, but it turns out to have been nothing but a scam. Time after time, there’s sworn testimony showing exactly how Trump put this enterprise together, calling it a university, which was a big no-no in NYS. In NY, you have to have accreditation to be considered a university, so he violated state law on that.

But the real issue is that he was using this entire enterprise not to help people, but to help himself to other people’s money. That was the whole point of plunking down upwards of $30,000 to hear a bunch of drones speak on about how you too can make money like Donald Trump in real estate. If you stick around and pay a few more thousands, I’ll tell you one trick that will change your life.

On and on it went, and despite Trump’s claims that the BBB gave it an A+, that was only in one time period, while other time periods showed multiple claims against the venture, before they stopped covering it entirely (and Trump changed the name).

How many people want to admit that they spent their life savings on a scam? Enough, it seems. Because all the latest info about the scam school comes from class action suits.

So the wife has started listening to country music which I have never been into. What artists can a northeast liberal listen to and not hate himself? I hear Tim McGraw and Garth Brooks are pretty liberal minded. Who else?

She’s more bluegrass than straight Nashville country, but Alison Krauss and Union Station are good.

I work with someone who got into a brawl with a raccoon that was going after her dog. She had to get some expensive, painful shots and her recommendation is just don’t do it. They are tenacious and vicious fighters, and their claws are no joke. Best to keep your dog clear of them if you can.
And now I will go walk my pups, hopefully not near any raccoons.

Bluegrass in general is a) much better musically and b) generally somewhat more liberal than Nashville Industrial Country. I find it far more enjoyable than 99% of modern country.

Ooh, and Gillian Welch.
And while we’re on the subject of female singers, check out Lucinda Williams and Iris Dement

Here she is with John Prine (another to listen to ) singing a fun duet

She don’t like her eggs all runny
She thinks crossin’ her legs is funny
She looks down her nose at money
She gets it on like the Easter Bunny
She’s my baby I’m her honey
I’m never gonna let her go

He ain’t got laid in a month of Sundays
I caught him once and he was sniffin’ my undies
He ain’t too sharp but he gets things done
Drinks his beer like it’s oxygen
He’s my baby
And I’m his honey
Never gonna let him go

Gram Parsons (Solo, The Byrds album Sweetheart of the Rodeo, Flying Burrito Brothers)
The Eagles
Kris Kristofferson
Waylon Jennings
Tammy Wynette
Uncle Tupelo

Where I used to work was a suburb north of Columbus that was really pure farm land a few years earlier. There were all kinds of critters in the area around our building.

One morning in early spring it was still a little dark as the sun was just starting to come up. I was walking from my car and right at the corner of the building where the sidewalk started off the parking lot I came upon momma coon and three babies coming down the sidewalk the other way. I couldn’t see them, they couldn’t see me.

As soon as I came around the corner, momma coon balled up and backed up pushing her young ones into the bushes and hissed at me. Sacred the crap out of me. I side stepped real quick and got past momma and she booked off with the kids as soon as I was past her.

I love them as I think they are smart, cute, etc. But I also know they can be bad asses and I also know a mother of any species will do everything to protect her kids. That sure woke me up for the day.

One last thought - speaking as a left coast progressive who takes ‘dirty fucking hippie’ as a compliment from his friends on a regular basis - enjoy the music for what it is. There’s so much good country music out there you shouldn’t have to listen to pop-country crap like Tim & Garth…yeah, they’re catchy tunes but they have no soul. But if you like them (and more importantly if she likes them), then by all means turn it up. But sneak a little Lucinda into the mix and let that gravelly voice of hers tell you a story.

Okay…last one, I promise. I posted this the other day…newish artist - Mary Gauthier - this is what I’m talking about…much better, IMO, than ‘I got friends in low places’…

If the Democratic party needs to have learned anything from this year’s primaries it would be to have your candidates state publicly and sign a document that you agree to the process as stated.

You must make it clear to all you understand each and every state has different rules and you agree to all of them. You also understand there are Super Delegates ( if they are still a part of it all next go-round) and are fine with them. And the biggie. You cant cry like a jilted preteen when things do not go your way and start complaining about the party rules.

All will be video recorded and it and the signed document will be easily seen by anyone wanting to view it at the DNC web site.

Yeah, I just caught up to some of the Sanders stuff above. Bernie. Bernie. Bernie.

Among the more hilarious responses I’ve read over the past few days to my tweets is that Hillary’s policies will be whatever Goldman Sachs says that they should be.

If that’s the case, then Goldman Sachs is a whole lot more progressive than anyone ever could have imagined.

After all, Hillary’s position on the issues includes higher minimum wages, equal rights and protections to minorities, and tighter regulation of Wall Street and corporate oversight.

It’s either that Goldman Sachs is more progressive, Hillary’s doing her own thing, or that Goldman Sachs’ payments for her speeches doesn’t buy her as her detractors always claim.

Of course, anyone with a functioning neuron would know this to be the case, which is why the whole paid speeches kerfuffle is so much fluff.

There’s a universe of difference between a paid appearance at a corporate event (which happens all the time), and actively scamming your customers out of their life savings, which is exactly what Trump did. Don’t see Trump supporters getting their panties in a twist over his scam. Guess they think that getting paid for appearances is a whole lot more important than engaging in a scam/fraud.

This is the GOP nominee. He’s a self-styled predator on the poor, uninformed, and those with limited knowledge.

You know, GOP voters.

I knew that the Trump U lawsuits would be a gold mine of data on Trump’s shenanigans, but this shows just how much of a scam artist he was. He was willing to scam people out of their life savings so he could get incrementally wealthier.

This is a guy whose real estate fortune was inherited, whose chief assets are primarily his name and brand slapped on to buildings built and owned by others, and whose doing everything imaginable to keep his wealth from the tax man (including recategorizing those trademarks so that they can escape domestic taxation).

That last bit is all legal as it falls into tax avoidance, but it shows that Trump’s doing everything imaginable to maintain his wealth while working towards winning the presidency so he can give him and those like him huge tax breaks.

I suspect he’s playing coy with his tax returns, because they would either expose his true income and assets as totaling far less than he brags or reveal how he’s managed to avoid paying as much taxes as he should. Also, they’d reveal how many charitable donations he’s made, which I suspect are a mere pittance compared to some other billionaires’.

re: #214 wheat-dogghazi-mailgate

That’s something I have said before as well. It would probably reveal that he’s cash poor, and all of his wealth is tied up in real estate, which makes sense since that’s what he inherited from his dad and where he makes his money.

Most of his wealth comes from trademarking his name and slapping it on to projects built by others. He then spends a lot of time trying to minimize his tax burdens while bragging he’s a billionaire.

Those tax returns would likely reveal he’s not generating the kind of income and wealth he claims, and that he’s certainly not the kind of philanthropist he says he is.

That he only sent checks after the WaPo came out identifying that the vets groups didn’t get money promised back in January shows that he’s playing the con on everyone he engages with.

Even the GOP and RNC, as he admits that he’s not going to have enough money on his own to run the ground game. That means that he’s going to be relying on donors to get to the White House. Certainly, he’s not the independently wealthy candidate who isn’t beholden to corporate interests as he has long claimed.

The only interests he’s caring about are his own bottom line.

Today was my day off — a real day off, with no teaching preparation time or visits to neighboring schools in the way. Plus, it was sunny and hot — perfect for putting out bed covers for airing out before I pack the duvets away for the summer. I baked a loaf of bread. And I installed Ubuntu on a desktop computer and got Ubuntu and the AMD Radeon card therein to work nice with each other. After I fumbled around most of the day making mistakes installing the AMD proprietary drivers, and eventually succeeding, I stumbled upon a stack that told me exactly how to do it, step by step. Figures.

I haven’t messed with Ubuntu since version 10. I started with the latest version, 16.04, but then discovered that AMD’s current Radeon drivers don’t work with v.16.04. But they work just great with v.12.04, so that’s what I settled on.

Why Ubuntu? The desktop is a hand-me-down and it had XP installed. And, naturally, XP is incompatible with the Radeon R9 370X card I bought second hand, thinking I’d get into gaming again.

More than half of Fortune 500 CEOs say they would prefer that Hillary Clinton win the White House instead of Donald Trump, according to a new survey.

Fifty-eight percent of the CEOs said they would support Clinton, the front-runner for the Democratic nomination, while 42 percent would support Trump, the presumptive Republican nominee, according to a survey conducted last month by Fortune and released on Wednesday.

“Big company CEOs tend to lean heavily Republican,” the survey said.
“But most of the 500 operate on a global scale, and many disagree with Trump’s proposals for raising trade barriers. Some also have been rattled by his stance on immigration, or by his comments showing little understanding of public finance.”

The survey, which was sent to all Fortune 500 CEOs, asked which candidate they would favor most as next president and gave the two leading candidates as the only options.

Once more into the breach. And Bernie again disrespects the President, who has done more to expand access to health care than anyone since LBJ. Curious how that happened. That’s not some mere oversight.

As someone who now can’t get denied coverage to a pre-existing condition thanks to ACA, Bernie can really fuck off with that. And honestly Bernie would be ripping FDR, HST, and LBJ if he were in office then.

Mexico, Indiana

Mexico is a census-designated place (CDP) in Miami County, Indiana, United States. The population was 836 at the 2010 census.

History
Mexico was platted in 1834.The community’s name probably commemorates the Mexican War of Independence.A post office has been in operation at Mexico since 1837.

There is a much larger (pop. 11,543) Mexico in Missouri. Among science fiction fandom it is known as the birthplace of the prolific and innovative writer Philip José Farmer.

On toddlers versus Muslim terrorists, ULC notes:

You may counter that the number of people killed by Islamic terrorists on a global level dwarfs the number of people shot and killed by toddlers. This may be true, but ask yourself: if we cannot stop toddlers from gaining access to deadly weapons, what chance do we have of stopping terrorists? We are so irresponsibly gun happy in this country, that kids who can’t even read or write have shot and killed people. Maybe we should take a look at our gun laws before encouraging needless Islamic paranoia.

Found a place where I could get to my phone so I could read this. I know Sanders thinks he’s running a revolutionary campaign as a socialist near the front of a party primary, but he’s got his facts a bit wrong. He’s not running as a socialist, he’s running as a Democrat. He’s not had to answer to being a socialist to get where he’s at. He’s not even had to say Independent.

And that would be a real problem for him if he were to become the nominee. His revolution hasn’t been battle hardened. He hasn’t been challenged on how his ideas would work in the US. When he was asked about the failures of socialism in South America, he avoided the question.

So no, as much as he might think, his campaign isn’t revolutionary. It’s just a campaign.

BATON ROUGE, La. —Gov. John Bel Edwards has signed a ban on the second-trimester abortion procedure called dilation and evacuation, making Louisiana the sixth state to prohibit the commonly used method.

The procedure, known as D&E, will only be allowed if necessary to prevent serious health risk to the mother when the ban takes effect Aug. 1.

snip

Anti-abortion groups describe the procedure as a “dismemberment abortion” and call it inhumane.

Opponents have said that the description isn’t medically accurate. They said the bill criminalizes the safest method of second-trimester abortion, leaving women at risk when they seek an alternative.

I don’t talk about it a lot. That is why my avatar is a Gold Star Family pin. However at the next village board meeting, I intend on going on blast about the man invited to speak at the remembrance ceremony here in town (he went on everything from liberals are out to take your guns and shut down a free press to bathroom panic).

I then intend to read the speech I would have given about Memorial Day if they had invited a local veteran (me) rather than the wingnut from the county seat.

Our town has never been much larger than it is now, but as you look across this field there are over a hundred flags fluttering on the breeze.

This cemetery represents a history of the nation’s combats, from the Civil War to the Persian Gulf War. As you move from north to south and up Rose Hill, you start with flag stands for the Grand Army of the Republic.

All of these men and women gave some, some of them gave all. Those who came home from battle became farmers, ranchers, business owners, husbands, wives, and parents.

Those who did not come home left behind families and friends who forever are without them; for them the war is not over and never will be.

If you have some time today after this remembrance ceremony, I encourage you to walk through the cemetery, and reflect on those of our village who answered the call to service. Reflect on their sacrifices and those of their families. Reflect on the meaning of Memorial Day, and the fervent hope that when our nation goes to war, we send our men and women forth in a just cause. Those buried here deserve nothing less.

Trump caters to the low information/no information voter who has known only what FauxNews and media reports have stated that the economy remains in free fall. They ignore that Wall Street is on solid ground compared to 8 years ago, and that the economy continues growing, albeit slowly.

One problem is that there are some regions that aren’t seeing economic growth, let alone recovery. That includes places like coal country. It also includes the boom/bust areas like Wyoming and the Dakotas and even Texas and Oklahoma, who tied their fortunes to the oil/fracking boom, and the oil price bust has meant that oil prices have dropped (good for consumers), but bad for states, which rely on those tax revenues, and it’s also bad for the producers, since they don’t have incentive to explore or exploit those wells, so they lay off staff since the economics of producing fracked oil/gas works only when oil prices are sustained at a high price per barrel.

That doesn’t fit on a bumper sticker, let alone twitter, so Trump simply states the economy sucks and he’ll fix it.

Saying that the economy is doing well is factual but requires nuance.

Do voters want nuance?

I don’t blame you. It always amazes me when wingnuts act shocked when they find out that not only are there liberal veterans such as yourself but that many of us non veteran liberals respect the hell out of veterans. My grandfather, a Korean War vet died when I was around the same age he was when he got deployed there and I could not imagine myself doing what he did. I’ve also always been proud that I had a relative fight for the Union in the Civil War. Even did some other research that showed that a distant uncle fought in the War of 1812.

Honestly, I think that’s a strike on conservatism’s credibility. The GI Bill allowed millions of American veterans access to better educations that they otherwise would not have had. Researchers from Museum of London Archaeology uncovered more than 400 wooden tablets during excavations in London’s financial district for the new headquarters of media and data company Bloomberg.

So far, 87 have been deciphered, including one addressed “in London, to Mogontius” and dated to A.D. 65-80 — the earliest written reference to the city, which the Romans called Londinium.

snip

The documents show that only a few years after it was established, London was already a thriving town of merchants and traders. The records include references to beer deliveries, food orders and legal rulings.

One tablet carries the date Jan. 8, A.D. 57, making it Britain’s earliest dated hand-written document. Fittingly for a city that is now the world’s commercial capital, it’s about money — an ancient IOU in which one freed slave promises to repay another “105 denarii from the price of the merchandise which has been sold and delivered.”

Reason #2 why Hillary needs to run on Obama’s record and not just play name-games with Trump. She should leave attacking him to her surrogates and go positive. Talk about what Democrats have accomplished and what Americans can look forward to if they keep them in office.

Or trust that “Dangerous Donald” is a winning strategy.

[Embedded content]

Why would you assume that she’s only capable of doing one or the other?

Once again, five seconds of Googling reveals that she’s already standing up for Obama’s record.

And please drop the ‘Dangerous Donald’ thing. She has.

This is excellent news for Republicans!

This is not a small issue. Data is the lifeblood of politics, and firms use the larger data trends in order to target voters in their client districts. They also rent the mailing lists of different candidates so they can reach out to voters directly. The idea of a presidential campaign not collecting its own data, and downplaying its importance is huge. It’s going to affect marketing on the GOP side through the next election cycle.

To add to country music discussion up top:

John Prine -Your Flag Decal Won’t Get You Into Heaven Anymore

Other good singers/bands that might not have been mentioned are Justin Townes Earl, Bobby Bare Jr, Jessica Lea Mayfield, Drive By Truckers, Margo Price.

Bluegrass wise I recommend .357 String Band, Devil Makes 3, Jayke Orvis, Old Crow Medicine Show.

There’s a lot of good music out there, it’s a shame you won’t hear it on the radio… which I guess is pretty much true of any genre.

It’s probably a translation used by the researchers.

You must be right:

Keeping Time: The Origin of B.C. & A.D.

In the early Middle Ages, the most important calculation, and thus one of the main motivations for the European study of mathematics, was the problem of when to celebrate Easter. The First Council of Nicaea, in A.D. 325, had decided that Easter would fall on the Sunday following the full moon that follows the spring equinox. Computus (Latin for computation) was the procedure for calculating this most important date, and the computations were set forth in documents known as Easter tables. It was on one such table that, in A.D. 525, a monk named Dionysius Exiguus of Scythia Minor introduced the A.D. system, counting the years since the birth of Christ.

DUBLIN, Ohio (AP) - Donald Trump is losing business to Mexico - a prestigious golf tournament at his resort at Doral.

The tournament chairman of the former Cadillac Championship, one of the four World Golf Championships that attract the best players in the world, said the PGA Tour has informed him the event is leaving next year for Mexico City.

Trump said as much Tuesday night in a Fox News interview with Sean Hannity. The presumptive Republican nominee said he had just heard the PGA Tour was taking the tournament out of the Miami area.

“They’re moving it to Mexico City, which, by the way, I hope they have kidnapping insurance,” Trump added.

Donald’s probably accurate in thinking he doesn’t need to spend any of his own money on gathering or analyzing data. The media provides him with free airtime, the RNC will pick up the tab for data gathering, and the Kochs will fund the state-level candidates. The RNC will collect the data anyway, but I certainly hope the front-runner’s attitude will damage everyone farther down the ‘R’ side of the ticket.

I was out last night doing my small bit for the ‘D’ side, entering data from the county Dems’ early phone-banking. Will see if our side’s dedication to data will pay off in votes in this purple Denver suburb — hoping to keep Michael Bennett and get rid of Mike Coffman.
Got a bit of third-hand gossip at the phone bank — one of the volunteers said she had a friend in New York who used to go to the same beauty salon as Donald Jr’s mother. Said friend had a few conversations with Mrs. Trump, who reportedly called her son ‘an arrogant fool.’ (She was his mother, after all, she had to keep it polite.) Would be interesting to see one of the PACs run quotes on record from people who’ve known and had to deal with him over the years. A couple of Tweets every day, so that he’s up till all hours trying to fire back.

I see nothing at all wrong with her going at Trump via Twitter. Why does it bother you so much?

Do you think she’s doing the same in her stump speeches - that she’s out there reeling off one-liners about Trump’s hair? Guess what - she’s not.

May 31: Helping Military families

May 27: “Describing the purpose of the meeting she said, “I want to know how the federal government and me, particularly, can be a better partner. I want to be a champion for Oakland and all the other Oaklands in the country.” The group discussed a number of topics from wages, jobs, urban policy, and urban renewal. She admitted that there aren’t easy answers for every problem at the local level, but decisions made at the local level are very important.”

May 26: “She began in Las Vegas, Nevada, however, where she attended the United Food & Commercial Workers (UFCW) Legislative and Political Affairs Conference. During her speech, Clinton said that Republican nominee Donald Trump is an urgent threat to workers’ rights. She said, “I’ve heard over and over again there has never been more at stake for working families in America than there is right now.” Clinton spoke about her plans to support labor unions, grow the middle class, and focus on the creation of new jobs.”

May 25: “Clinton also outlined her proposal to rebuild the nations infrastructure. She vowed to implement the plan during her first 100 days in office. The plan includes provisions that will:

Deliver the most significant increase in infrastructure investment since President Eisenhower built the Interstate Highway System
Connect every household in America to affordable broadband and lead the world into next-generation wireless
Develop transportation technology of tomorrow
Make America the clean energy superpower of the 21st century with a cleaner, smarter, and more resilient electric grid
Eliminate the chose points of commerce
Revitalize public schools in every ZIP code and invest in communities being left out and left behind
Build American airports that are the envy of the world
Leverage private capital through public-private partnerships and ensure that taxpayer dollars are put to good use”

There is a lot more where that came from. She’s talking issues on the stump, and you’re fretting about her Twitter timeline.

Trump might campaign via Twitter. Hillary doesn’t and you’re taking an extremely myopic view if you think that’s what she’s doing.

Maybe she doesn’t have a choice in this election. Maybe going after Trump is the only way she’ll get fair attention from the media. The rules have changed with Trump. Even the talking heads on TV are saying you can’t beat him with a traditional campaign of ideas. Such is our democracy.

It is not a question of “voting for the lesser of two evils.” There is only evil, and not evil.

Mrs. Clinton is not evil.

As far as the ridiculous notion of in-person voter fraud, it is noteworthy that uber-red state Nebraska makes voting just as easy as in Oregon (by mail). It is almost as if the GOP wants to make voting difficult in battleground states to improve their chances.

Hmm, I don’t remember him praising President Obama’s magna cum laude graduation from Harvard (which is a step above Shapiro’s cum laude) or POTUS’ Constitutional Law bona fides (he taught it for 12 years at the University of Chicago Law School).

Aside from a short stint actually working as an attorney, Shapiro hasn’t done squat with his law degree. He’s nothing more than a yappy little right-wing attack dog who spends his days nipping at the ankles of liberals who are actually working to get things done. Maybe he should try getting his ass out there and actually doing something useful with his education instead of spending every day spewing vitriol at others from inside the safety of his little right-wing bubble.

There was a time when the media saw the news as a public service. Now it has to make a profit, and thus they have to sell a horse race.

If the news reported that every reasonable assessment of the electoral map shows that Mrs. Clinton will win the Electoral College in a blowout (rather than simply showing a map with the huge swath of red that I live in the middle of), that would not sell advertising.

Thing is, people win elections, not square miles. The 1.2 people per square mile in my county, as large as it is, is not the same as a similarly-sized area (New York City).

Twitter really isn’t the place you go where you want to know where a candidate stands on the issue. Twitter is for the quick sound bite.

I hesitate to say this, but I sort of agree with Darth on the specific topic of the Twitter ratio. As a firm Hil supporter, I’d like to see her Twitter feed keep an average of seven tweets that shift the conversation to her actions and issues vs. three that poke the blithering yam. She can’t ignore him, but I’d like to see more attention directed to more interesting topics.

Mind you, this may be because I’m am thoroughly sick of yam. I always did prefer sweet potatoes.

But Mr. Trump will not have to deal with just Mrs. Clinton. He also has to deal with Mrs. Granholm, Comrade Senator Professor Elizabeth Warrenova, and other women politicians swamping his Twitter timeline. Mrs. Clinton has many people who are quite willing to go into the trenches on her behalf.

Poor Donald may overspeed his thumbs typing on Twitter in response (as he cannot let anything that slights him go by). Look for him to be supporting thumb splints as the campaign continues.

That actually works well to delegitimise Mr. Trump’s seeming advantage on Twitter. He will waste his time on people who are not running for office (Elizabeth Warren, Jennifer Granholm, Barack Obama), and every minute he is attacking them, he is not attacking the actual candidate for office (Hillary Clinton).

In this case, divide and conquer works against Mr. Trump.

It might appear that “she’s got this,” but I’ll crawl over four hundred miles of broken glass and lava to get to a polling place to vote for Mrs. Clinton over the fascist. (I am under no illusions that the candidate I supported in the primaries, Mr. Sanders, is going to win at this point.)

Like here in Ohio!

Thankfully the courts seem to rule in favor of more voting opportunities not less.

And I use our very easy mail in ballot system. I also make sure my ballot is mailed well before the actual general vote…as soon as I can.

The little ankle biter doggie is too cute for Benny. But then all doggies are too cute for Benny…even the ones that win the ugly dog contests. I guess I am a lover of all Mother Natures creatures. But I don’t give that same break to ugly-acting humans.

I am disappointed Mr. Sanders did not do better. That does not mean I do not think Mrs. Clinton would be a bad president; I think she will make a fine and capable president. I do think Mr. Sanders brought some attention to issues that were not getting enough attention, as Governor Brown of California noted in his own endorsement of Mrs. Clinton.

However, the primaries are almost over and Mr. Sanders has a near-insurmountable deficit to make up to win. Mrs. Clinton is so far ahead it would take a meteor strike on her campaign now. There is no way in hell I would sit out the election (despite the seeming futility of voting in my red state) and not oppose the fascist. We fought a damn war against fascism; I will not cease speaking out against him in my little town.

New Horizons captured the images from a distance of about 9,850 miles on July 14, 23 minutes before the probe’s closest approach to Pluto (which brought it to within 7,800 miles of the dwarf planet’s surface).

Though the encounter took place more than 10 months ago, New Horizons is still beaming flyby data home, and likely won’t be done doing so until this coming fall, mission team members have said.

(CNN)The New York City Department of Buildings confirmed Wednesday that it is investigating the use of the Trump Tower atrium for campaign events, which may violate an agreement Donald Trump made to keep parts the building open to the public when he built the landmark.
Department spokesman Joe Soldevere told CNN that the “Department of Building’s enforcement unit is investigating whether the atrium was improperly closed to the public.”

Soldevere said the probe was sparked by Tuesday’s press conference at Trump Tower. The Associated Press first reported the investigation by the Department of Buildings.
A message left with the Trump campaign was not immediately returned on Wednesday.
Trump struck a deal with New York City in 1979 that allowed for extended zoning of the now-famous building on Fifth Avenue in Manhattan. But the special permit stipulated that the atrium of the building “be accessible and kept open to the public from 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. daily.”
While the deal said the atrium could be closed to the public up to four times a year with permission, Soldevere told CNN that they had “received no such requests” from the Trump campaign. An official with the city planning department added that no requests had been received in the past two years. And Trump has frequently used the space for campaign events, including interviews, press conferences and even the announcement of his campaign.

I saw this, this morning. A scripted response for salesmen dealing with marks who won’t commit because they’re at financial risk:

As one of your mentors for the last three days, it’s time for me to push you out of your comfort zone. It’s time for you to be 100% honest with yourself. You’ve had your entire adult life to accomplish your financial goals. I’m looking at your profile and you’re not even close to where you need to be, much less where you want to be. It’s time you fix your broken plan, bring in Mr. Trump’s top instructors and certified millionaire mentors and allow us to put you and keep you on the right track. The brouhaha over the shooting is ridiculous. OK, it sucks that the beast is dead, but it’s just an animal, sorry.

I don’t see how the Zoo had any choice. First, tranks don’t drop animals in their tracks, movies notwithstanding. Second, gorillas have no particular reason NOT to kill small humans. Third, you can’t REALLY wait till the gorilla is ABOUT TO hurt the kid to shoot.

But it’s tragic. We ruin their habitat, kill them outright for souvenirs, then imprison some of them in these cages for our own amusement, and even then we can’t leave them alone - we build enclosures that don’t keep us out, and then we have to kill one of them.

Zoos are actually a critical component in wildlife conservation (when they are run correctly).

I am not keen on the idea of placing a single animal in an enclosure without companionship or whatnot. Zoos that are set up more as open parks that allow animals to freely roam seem a bit more humane to me.

Like most things humans do, it isn’t all evil or all good. In the case of the Cincinnati Zoo, there certainly should be an enquiry into how a toddler was able to get into the enclosure in the first place. As far as the gorilla went, he probably viewed the child as nothing more than an interesting object or toy. (He didn’t directly attack the child, or he would have killed him instantly.)

Even if the gorilla was simply playing with the boy, he would have killed him by accident. I am disappointed the gorilla had to be shot, but there was no reasonable way to get the child out safely. It was necessary, and I am sure the person who did the shooting did it in such a way as to prevent any more suffering of the gorilla than absolutely necessary.

I do think the enclosure should be examined however to see whether there was a failing in security and how it could be corrected (along with exhibits of other dangerous animals). Parents bring children to zoos all the time, not expecting the animals to be able to kill or maim their children.

Only problem vampires have with garlic is the smell. They have much sharper senses than humans.

They can’t eat anything anyway. Their digestive system doesn’t work. They’re dead after all. So anything other than blood they ingest will sit there until it rots.

And I end up being of two minds there. To a great extent, we can’t help but ruin habitat as mankind expands its range, so we WILL be killing off many species that are very narrowly adapted. At least in Zoos, those species can be preserved, living in the most comfortable artificial setting we can manage, and maybe one day reintroduce them to a safe habitat.

But that costs money, and space, and there doesn’t seem to be enough of either without having the animals where everybody can go look at them, which means zoos, which means containment issues like this one, or the idiots at the San Francisco Zoo a few years back who thought it would be fun to harass the tigers - what’s the worst that could happen? Turns out, an angry tiger can actually escape the enclosure, and come find you.

I have a very soft spot for the Cincinnati Zoo and the gorillas there because I was part of the zoo’s volunteer team monitoring the gorillas when the lowland breeding program began more than 35 45 years ago. (edited to correct the timeframe…jeebus, I’m old.)
That said, I wasn’t there to witness this recent tragedy and wouldn’t even begin to think of second-guessing the zoo’s response.
I’m saddened the gorilla had to die, that the child is traumatized, and much of the public debate has been ill-informed.

Most vampire stories have to handwave around just how large an impact even a few vampires would have, even in a large urban setting. For example, Chicago, the city wingnuts LOVE to paint as some kind of mecca of death, had 468 murders last year. Let’s say there are maybe 100 vampires there, each feeding, let’s say once a week. That’s 5200 missing people a year, and 5200 bodies that either get found or need to be disposed of.

Someone would notice.

Funny thing about vampire fiction - it changes with the times. In the late 1960s, Dark Shadows had a vampire who didn’t really want to kill women, but he had to keep doing it. He was a sympathetic character and women just LOVED him, and the show was very popular.

Fast forward to the 1990s, and a guy who runs around killing women he picks up in bars is no longer a sympathetic character, especially with women, even if he doesn’t enjoy it. Dark Shadows revival series lasts 12 episodes.

That’s 5200 missing people a year, and 5200 bodies that either get found or need to be disposed of.

Someone would notice.

But if they own a blood bank, they can skim more than enough in a city that size without having to actually kill anybody. (also… the stockyards. Maybe human blood is like 5-star dining, but cattle/sheep/etc is sufficient for all but the fussiest.)

bingo.
and if they’re not being permanently killed off (whatever that means) faster than they are taking new victims, their population wouldn’t stop growing. unsustainable.

Thus some mythologies have victims simply dying, rather than becoming undead themselves, and vampires having to CHOOSE to ‘turn’ a victim. The geometric progression from 1 kill = 1 new vampire would rapidly deplete the victim pool.

re: #499 Romantic Heretic

Note: This is my own vampire mythology that I use for my stories. I don’t actually know anything about vampires. Not even if they exist. Very unlikely and I sure hope not.

Entirely unconvincing disclaimer, especially since I have NEVER seen you in daylight. Et tu, Nosferatu?

The male gorilla was on loan from Zoo Miami for breeding purposes.

Yes, he was.
The zoo was able to save some of his sperm after he was killed.

Yep, but it depends on your mythology again. Some limit feeding to humans.

The Cincinnati Zoo has been in the forefront of gorilla breeding, both at the zoo and in the wild in Africa, and has been extremely successful in increasing the lowland gorilla population in the wild and bringing it back from the brink of extinction.

Along with the Columbus zoo who was the first at successfully breeding a captive ape…Colo!

From her Wiki Page

Colo (born December 22, 1956) is a western gorilla widely known as the first gorilla to be born in captivity anywhere in the world and as the oldest gorilla in captivity in the world. Colo was born at the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium to Millie Christina (mother) and Baron Macombo (father). She was briefly called Cuddles before a contest was held to officially name her. The contest was won by a Columbus native, Rita Cochren. Colo’s name is derived from the place of her birth, Columbus, Ohio.

She turned 59 late last year.

Here is a YouTube of her 57th birthday.

Colo’s 57th Birthday

By the way, the Columbus Zoo has come a long long way since those days and most of the zoo is less cage like and more open range.

Funny story. I made a bunch of signs for some apartments in Columbus back in the early 80s. One of the complexes was called Olde Cape Colony.

About a month after installing the signs we got a call someone had taken some of the letters off the sign base. What was left Old_ _ape Colo__.

We laughed and laughed when we saw that. The complex management didn’t understand until we told them of Colo the ape.

My sister was a fan of the show. My mother banned her from watching it because it gave her nightmares, but she insisted on watching it every day after school.

A friend of mine has introduced vampires into a series of novels he writes. They’re not standard Dracula vampires (crosses and silver do bupkis to them) but they do have extreme photosensitivity (multiculturalism is a big benefit with burkas being commonplace these days) and a craving for blood. The bad news is that the blood has to be from a living human being and consumption of it slowly kills the donor by psychic link. The government has made a seriously unethical arrangement with the PHANGS (Photogolic Hemophagic Anagathic Neurotropic Guys) to supply them with blood from terminal patients in exchange for Doing As They’re Told. Excrement eventuates.

So if I have a silver cross it works against both?

How about a silver Mogen David?

Silver challah knife! But a silver Mogen David would work as well as a ninja star.

Hello from lurker land! I know I’m late to the party here, but as a card-carrying Northeast Leftie folk & Americana musician, I wanted to recommend a coupla things.

First, anything in the world that Chris Thile has been part of. Nickel Creek, Punch Brothers, and his solo work or duo stuff with Mark O’Connor:

The Greatest Improv Mandolin Solo Ever: Chris Thile w. Mark O’Connor

Chris is apparently also replacing Garrison Keillor as the host of Prairie Home Companion, fer cryin’ out loud.

Then there’s “alt country”. Someone already mentioned Lucinda Williams and Steve Earle, and there’s a whole lot else going on in that crowd. So much skill and class, from duos like Shovels & Rope, ex-duos like the Civil Wars, country rockers like the Old 97’s and the Drive-By Truckers, new supergroups like Trigger Hippy and the incredible teamup of Tedeschi & Trucks… or if her taste runs quieter, there’s a wonderful vein of compassionate country and folk that stretches from John Denver right past Emmylou Harris and the whole damn Wainwright family, through Dave Carter (RIP) & Tracy Grammer, around Townes Van Zandt (RIP), and on into present-day regional up-and-comers like the Young Novelists, Spuyten Duyvil, the Hello Strangers, and me and my friends. :)

Enjoy!

Looks like I have some new things to look for and listen to…as for Chris Thile, a few years ago I bought a cheap mandolin (I had never tried playing one before) and was ever so disappointed that I actually did not sound like him when I tried to play it.
