When I was 11, I had heart surgery at the University of Alabama-Birmingham. We met a Methodist minister and his wife who became close friends of the family.

I was visiting them a few years later, when the preacher kicked me out of bed. Get up, today is a surprise, get ready. We’ll be gone all day.

We drove to Tuscaloosa and he introduced me to Paul Bryant.

That was June. Bryant died the following January.
