It’s terrifying, but the way I see it is this:
Human beings have always had to defend our young from predators, it’s just that now they have guns, and some have badges instead of big teeth.
The best you can do is to try and outsmart them and keep your fingers crossed.
…and possibly give up on the idea of a good nights sleep.

And that is so very fucked up. I can’t imagine my little kidhood having been afraid to go to a friendly police officer if I needed help the way I was taught to. That just freaks me out. it’s indescribably wrong and evil.
