It’s quite simple. By saying both sides do it, you can ignore the possibility that your side is doing it…or at least dilute the negative attention your side is getting because of it. Whatever it happens to be (racism, sexism, ageism, theism, ismism…)

OR

if you constantly yell that the OTHER side is doing it you can ignore that your side is!
