But a lot of the religions *want* you feeling repressed and guilty.

There are plenty of people in my own church that feel that way. Unfortunately they obsess about a particular (albeit inportant) doctrine like chastity and forget to exercise love, charity and mercy when a youth struggles with obedience to Gods law. Even worse they confuse obedience to them with obedience to Gods law.

The result is children who behave magnificently for them but are fornicating and foul when they aren’t being watched.

I’ve always prayed that the absolute worst behavior my children ever exhibited was reserved for me and that they would be free enough and strong enough to do their best when left to their own devices.

The parents who think they have perfect children are sadly blind and often distant from them.
