and that vulcans/klingons/humans can apparently create offspring, which is just so thoroughly preposterous that I want to strangle that one half klingon kid that worf and whosiwhatsy spawn every time he crops up, which I think fortunately is only once.

That was explained in Next Generation. These species are all engineered by an earlier life form, and are all related.
