The Navy is anal about securing power and red tagging it before working on it. During the tagging process, you need a separate person to verify the correct breaker. Once tagged, you must verify no power to the fixture by using a multimeter. Then, and only then, can you work on it.

Comes in handy when working on -28,000 volt radar power supplies.


Lots of time they use multiwire branch circuits on lighting which is a 3 phase network with a common neutral.so the feed can be dead but there is more voltage on the neutral than on the hot wires. I got hung up in one once, it was the only time I couldn’t break myself clear. Had someone else not knocked the ladder out from under me it could have been fatal. As for radar power supplies, we had to work on the 400hz generators. Electricity at 400hz is alot scarier than at 60hz.
