Well, my father’s grandparents, yes, that’s one way to look at it.
There is the Freedman’s Bank records. Those are available relatively inexpensively on CD. Or they were ten years ago. They may be even more readily available now.
I do know that archive.org is in the process of scanning the entire census from 1790-onwards. That link I gave can also be helpful but only if you suspect your ancestor took the name of the master. Many did, many did not.
