IIRC, they found a meteorite with some complex carbon compounds embedded in it. They weren’t life though they were sufficiently complex be an early precursor to life.

Martian meteorite ALH 84001, found in Antarctica, had chemical signs of life, inclusions that sure look like microfossils of bacteria-like entities, and strings of magnetite grains like the ones bacteria use to determine their orientation. It was announced by David McKay’s group at NASA in 1996.

The denial industry immediately got on the case, and have skewed the consensus into rejecting the evidence—again. Just like the Viking results.
