I think that’s why wingnutism seems to fester in Middle America - yeah, fishfolk might have the occasional run-in with a family of “others”, but the vast majority of people they encounter are pasty-white wingnuts just like themselves, so they can kinda coast along on their beliefs and not think too hard on the implications as it involves their non-white-male-wingnut “friends”.

That’s probably true. My immediate family lives in Orange County and while wingnutty, they are nowhere near as bad as my uncle who lives out in Hesperia
