Definitely. And I also recall an unprecedented amount of later scaling-back on those convictions once people returned to sanity and realized some of them were a bit overblown.
I was suggesting that such “clarity of conviction” could have caused a lack of peripheral vision, that would allow someone advocating concentration camps for American citizens to slip into the mainstream without being called on it.
