It’s because they feel those workers shouldn’t be paid more, that their low wages should serve as an incentive for them to want to get a better, higher paying job and that if the min. wage goes up, people will just be content to work at Pizza Hut for $13/hr their whole lives.

But many people WILL work at Pizza Hut or Target or Walmart or McDonalds for their whole lives. Should they live in poverty for most of their lives because they don’t rise to middle management or get a college degree? Let’s face it: not everyone has the intellect or skills to advance very far in the workaday world. Does that mean they don’t deserve a decent wage?

The response I hear from the right is usually along the lines of, “Screw them, let them eat cake.” It’s utterly lacking in both compassion and recognizing certain economic realities.
