Because according to the Confederate Conscription Act, men owning more than 20 slaves were exempt from the draft. They had to stay home and protect the womenfolk…

It was the “temporarily embarrassed millionaires” bit of its day, convincing poor white folks that if abolitionism won, then they would forever lose any hope of raising their own social station so that they might one day own a plantation with hundreds of slaves keeping them wealthy.
